Positive Birth Story- Caesarean after a Homebirth Transfer -Hayley

Welcome to this small corner of the internet where we share positive birth stories.

Here is Hayley and baby Joshua’s story.

They (the midwives) were really lovely and they always gave me choices and made sure I was in control but safe.

So I planned a home birth with Joshua. I had a really long labour as he was back to back which I didn’t realise.

Joshua was 11 days over my estimated due date. When my contractions started, I phoned up the Horton, as advised. They told me that they didn’t have the staff so I’d have to go to the Spires. I said it wasn’t good enough and that is what I was trying to avoid. They ended up putting it through to their manager and agreed to honour my request. When I then didn’t progress the midwife assigned to me was really lovely on the phone and I was advised I would be assigned to someone else, but not to worry.

We had a nice day when the contractions were slow and not progressing (Mum, Nick and I). 21 hours later when they got strong, the midwives came out. They were really lovely and they always gave me choices and made sure I was in control but safe. They explained what I needed to do to try and turn him. Then when I went in the pool they kept out of the way, but were there when I needed them.

Unfortunately when they examined me, he had pooed a significant amount in me. I was 7cm at the time. They recommended I go to hospital. I was blue lighted at rush hour. The paramedics were lovely and one of the midwives came with me. Everyone was so lovely that I didn’t worry. When I was taken in to the JR, they examined me and found I was 10cm dilated but he was in such an awkward position that even with forceps they couldn’t get him out. My only option was a c section. Nick and I were amazed at how the anaesthetist had full control of the room. He explained everything to me and offered reassurance whilst making sure everyone in the room knew what they were doing. It wasn’t what I wanted but I knew I was in safe hands, so again, I never panicked. When I found out he was 9lb 13oz I was relieved I didn’t push him out!

My after care was also positive this time. Everyone was really lovely and helpful on the recovery ward. I had so many negatives with Freya and was really traumatised by it which is why I wanted a home birth. I was so impressed this time and despite it being different from what I wanted, I found it a much more positive experience.
